Transforming Wave Energy: Insights from Completed Wave Tank Testing in France

NoviOcean's Path to Cost-Effective Renewable Energy Solutions

Conclusions after Completed Wave Tank Testing in France

After successfully completing our wave tank tests at ECN’s Research Laboratory in Hydrodynamics, Energetics & Atmospheric Environment (LHEEA), Nantes, we can now with high certainty verify that:

The full-scale NoviOcean unit rated at 500 kW (NO500) is expected to reach its full capacity at waves with significant height of 3.5 meters. This verifies our previous third-party simulations.

In a location with medium wave energy flux (e.g., Pilot Zone, Portugal), the average generated electricity can reach to 250 kW per unit, indicating a capacity factor (CF) of 50% and more than 2000 MWh/year

It has now been seen that the similar capacity factor can be maintained for larger units up to 2 MW rated capacity.

Thanks to the non-resonant behaviour, the control system can operate in a very simple, effective, and precise way.

We plan to have the first full-scale NO500 unit developed and ready for deployment by 2024 with a total cost of 5 MEUR, which is a fraction of what other wave energy developers have used so far. More details about the status of our EU grants will be revealed soon when all details are settled.

“We are humble to the fact that it looks like we have discovered a highly effective and cost-efficient way to solve a considerable part of the climate crisis, fast!”, said Jan Skjoldhammer, founder and CEO of Novige AB. He continued: “We will offer low-priced production licences to shipyards and industrial actors world-wide, in order to improve the speed to reach our goal; Saving the climate with profitable wave power.”
