We recently had the privilege of interviewing Jan G. Skjoldhammer, Founder and CEO of NoviOcean. As a visionary leader of the energy sector, Jan is committed to addressing the global challenges of energy sustainability through cutting-edge technology. With a shift in career from aviation to being a leader in the field sustainability, Jan’s career journey is truly inspirational.
With NoviOcean, Jan is revolutionizing the energy landscape by providing stable and profitable ocean energy solutions to eight key global sectors, vital to reducing operational costs and carbon footprint.
We started the interview by asking, “Can you walk us through your professional journey and how it led to where you are today?”
Jan G. Skjoldhammer shared, “I started my career as an Airline Captain with a degree in business. With combined aviation expertise and entrepreneurial spirit, and after a successful large real estate investment, I focused on developing the Hybrid Ocean Energy Converter, securing 3 patent families across 20 countries and advancing it to TRL 7.
Witnessing aviation’s unsustainable fossil fuel reliance and past inventions’ delayed success sparked my motivation. Now, I’m dedicated to bringing NoviOcean to life, transforming renewable energy and reducing carbon dependence. With a proven track record of innovation, I’m poised to make a lasting impact in the clean energy landscape.”
Every field is filled with inevitable challenges. To learn more about the obstacles present in Jan’s sector, we asked, “Reflecting on your career, what have been some of the most significant challenges you’ve faced, and how did you overcome them?”
Jan G. Skjoldhammer shared, “The energy sector is facing significant challenges, particularly with electrical consumption projected to triple by 2040. This growing demand puts pressure on our existing infrastructure and resources.
While we’re making progress in renewable energy, with sources like solar and wind expected to comprise 70% of global electricity generation by 2050, we still face a major hurdle – intermittency. Current technologies struggle to provide a consistent supply, resulting in a substantial 40% energy deficit. This shortfall means we’re forced to continue relying on fossil fuels or giant and costly battery storage solutions, which hinders our transition to a sustainable energy landscape.”
We were interested to learn more about the services offered by Jan G. Skjoldhammer’s company and how it sets a unique position in the market. So, we asked, “Tell us more about your services and if you are planning to add something new in the future.”
“At NoviOcean, we effectively address the challenges of this field, providing a more stable energy output. Our solutions to the obstacles include revolutionizing renewable energy with exceptional efficiency, delivering 3 to 40 times higher output than competition to power 1,050 households. Our technology also offers a high return on investment, with 5 to 50 times higher output per investment, and boasts the best market valuation.
Moreover, we provide stable energy output, capturing up to double the wholesale price, through its innovative hybrid design combining wave, wind, and solar PVs. With high energy density, double or more than offshore wind, and a cost-effective approach, NoviOcean transforms the renewable energy landscape.” Jan added.
To learn how Jan includes technological advancements in business operations, we asked, “How does your approach to innovation and scaling enable NoviOcean to address global challenges?”
“Our focus is on solving real-world problems, as we do with energy intermittency. At NoviOcean, we’re driven to solve complex global challenges through cutting-edge innovation. We protect our ideas with patents, prove our concepts in real-world conditions, and build strong partnerships to help us scale.
Skilled talent is crucial to our success, and our team’s broad expertise has been a game-changer in bringing our technology to the world. By leveraging patented technologies, real-world testing, and strategic partnerships, we scale impactful solutions. Our team of experts propels the mission and enables us to bring transformative technologies to market, driving meaningful change and a sustainable future.” He responded.
Ensuring client satisfaction and engagement is the key to a successful business. So, we asked, “What strategies do you implement to maintain high levels of employee engagement and satisfaction?”
Jan G. Skjoldhammer replied, “At NoviOcean, we cultivate collaborative excellence by integrating diverse expertise. Our multidisciplinary team comprises PhDs, master’s degree holders, experts in Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Operations, as well as business development and contractual negotiations professionals. Our board brings together renowned specialists in Energy Transition, Offshore Works, Sustainability, and transforming innovative ideas into successful products and business models.
By celebrating successes and learning from challenges at NoviOcean, we build resilience and strengthen team bonds, ensuring well-rounded project outcomes and innovative solutions. The fact that we are working on solving one of present time´s largest challenges; to mitigate climate change, this is what drives me to work long hours, as well as keeping the enthusiasm high within the team.”
We ended the interview by asking, “How do you want your business to be remembered, and what steps are you taking to secure that legacy?
“At NoviOcean, we’re harnessing the vast potential of ocean energy to power a sustainable future. With the market projected to reach €53 billion by 2050, we’re strategically targeting key sectors – including ports, offshore oil rigs, desalination, remote islands, and coastal regions.
Through collaborative partnerships with industry leaders and our innovative Hybrid Ocean Energy Converter, we’re delivering stable, cost-effective solutions. We are currently discussing our expansion plans, including replacing costly and polluting diesel generators for oil rigs, desalination and remote islands. Further on co-location with offshore wind farms, larger coastlines, and hydrogen production, solidifying our position as a pioneer in the renewable energy landscape.” Jan concluded.
NoviOcean’s innovative Hybrid Energy Converter (NHEC) harnesses the combined power of wave, wind, and solar energy. This groundbreaking technology delivers efficient and cost-effective renewable energy, paving the way for a sustainable future.
NoviOcean HEC delivers double the power output per sea area compared to wind power. Its hybrid design (wave, wind, solar) and efficient use of infrastructure lead to a lower Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) in early evolution.
Noviocean HEC is easy to produce, install, and maintain due to its modular design and well-proven parts. It boasts a low environmental footprint and superior power-to-weight ratio compared to offshore wind.
NoviOcean offers competitive development costs, with LCOE reaching €100/MWh after only 100 units deployed, then lower. Investment benefits include attractive incentive programs, expected high profits, participation in a meaningful and scaleable clean energy solution, and not the least, extremely positive marketing effects for partners and users.
NoviOcean is in Stage 4 (TRL 7), developing a 1:1 scale pilot to demonstrate real-world performance and pave the way for commercial deployment.
NoviOcean aims to deliver stable ocean energy at a lower cost than offshore wind and secure 0.5 GW of contracted capacity by 2030.
NoviOcean envisions having 10 GW deployed by 2050, capturing 25% of the EU's 2050 target and generating €30 billion in sales within Europe alone. The global market potential is three times larger.
NoviOcean’s patented innovations and efficient components create a resilient, high-power-density Ocean Energy Converter. With streamlined processes for manufacturing, installation, and maintenance, NoviOcean offers lower costs and competitive LCOE values, challenging existing ocean energy solutions and fossil fuels.
